The creation of NCCR LIVES is the result of the development of an interdisciplinary team of researchers attached to the University of Lausanne and the University of Geneva. The institutional constraints motivated them to find a niche that would allow them to expand their existing collaboration and make it evolve into something permanent that would become a focus of development for life course issues in the Lake Geneva region.

After various institutional permutations, the result was the Centre for Studies in Lifestyle and Life Course, known as the PAVIE Centre for short. In 2009, with the support of the two universities, the researchers of the PAVIE Centre and their extended network submitted a proposal to the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) for a programme of research with the object of studying vulnerability throughout the life span. This proposal led to the creation of NCCR LIVES in 2011.

The NCCR LIVES has concluded its first 4-year phase and has now entered the second phase.
